The Quest for Triple Digits: The 2026 Spencer Strider Comeback Watch
For two years, the loudest sound in Truist Park wasn't the chop—it was the thwack of a 100-mph Spencer Strider fastball hitting the catcher's mitt. But after a 2024 season lost to UCL surgery and a 2025 campaign that saw him struggle to find his "giddy-up," the question for 2026 is simple: Is the Ace back?
The 2025 Hangover: By the Numbers
Last year was technically Strider's "return," but it didn't look like the 2022-23 version of the mustache-clad phenom. In 23 starts, he pitched to a 4.45 ERA with a 1.39 WHIP. Most concerningly, his strikeout rate—once the gold standard of MLB—dipped from 37% to 24%.

Spring Training 2026: The "Shape" is Back
The early reports from North Port this March are encouraging. In his latest outing against the Blue Jays, Strider consistently hit 96.7 mph. While it’s not quite the triple-digit heat of his rookie year, Statcast data shows that his Induced Vertical Break (IVB) is returning to elite levels. In 2023, he averaged 18.4 inches of break; it plummeted to 16.4 last year, but it's currently sitting at 17.0 this spring.
"Having clean innings in spring is fun, but it doesn't help you enough. I'm focusing on the shapes of the pitches. I want that late-life movement back." — Spencer Strider, March 5, 2026
Why 2026 is Different
Unlike last year, Strider had a "normal" offseason. He wasn't in a rehab facility; he was in a pitching lab. He’s spent the winter working on a slightly different arm angle (moving back toward 48 degrees) to generate more power. With Spencer Schwellenbach and Hurston Waldrep sidelined with their own elbow issues, the Braves don't just want Strider to be an ace—they need it.
What to Watch For in April
- The Radar Gun: If he’s sitting 96-98 mph in the first inning of his first start against the Royals, the league is in trouble.
- The Slider Whiff Rate: Last year, hitters were making more contact on the slider because they weren't afraid of the fastball. Look for that 40%+ whiff rate to return.
- Command over Velocity: Strider has noted he's "reinventing" himself. If the 100 mph isn't there, watch how he uses his improved changeup to keep hitters off-balance.
